Lake Lanier Corps of Engineers

Lake Lanier was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950’s. The Corp currently has the responsibility to manage, preserve and protect the lake's environment while providing for a balanced use of the lakeshore.

Homeowners need the Corps permission to install a dock on their property or to do any work on public property.

Lake Lanier is one of 464 lakes in 43 states constructed and operated by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Can someone tell the manageent at the Buford Dam in Georgia ( Buford Ga.) to close down the flood gates some so the water coming out will be reduced during hard rain storms. The run off water and streams keep the river flowing during a rain storm, but the dam continues to dump tons of water into the river which causes flooding down stream. Also, closing the flood gates down some will fill up the lake sooner and keep flooding down. Last time our lake was at full pool was about 8 years ago. The lake needs to be higher.

Seems to me the problem could be addressed if the down-stream sites needing more water were to build small dams to control the flow of water in their areas. Then the amount of water released from lanier could be reduced, hopefully allowing it to refill.

I too hate the Army Corps. Military "intelligence" at its very WORST!!!

hear lots of gripes--didn't the state of Georgia try and build 3 reservoirs for water supply a few years ago and the real estate industry killed the proposal because they couldn't sell expensive lots on the shorelines. is anyone demanding of the state officials and atlanta officials and saying BUILD SOME RESERVOIRS NOW BEFORE ANOTHER DROUGHT DISASTER COMES.

The problem is Gov. Sonny Perdue. He sold his soul to Bush and when he went to Bush for help, guess who gave him the finger and said work it out with the Gov's from Ala.and Fla. Sonny needs to be "removed"from office immediately and replaced by someone who can think ahead and plan accordingly. I can't believe more people haven't sued the Corps.for their general "sloppiness"in coltrolling our lake level and the release of water for Fla.& Ala.. What are these states going to do when the well runs dry and we can't release any more water over the dam ?Further, what is Georgia going to do ? My suggestion is to start a drainage canal from the Tenn.river down and along I75 until it reaches an area just north of both Lake Allatoona and Lanier, then run split off canals to both lakes and hope for the best. California did this many years ago and the canals are still in existence and performing very well to this day. Time for Sonny to get serious about this problem and use that surplus tax money he has to help all of us.

THE LAKE BACK IN 1957 WAS ABLE TO REPLENISHE ITSELF WITH 30 FEET OF WATER WITHIN A 1 YEAR PERIOD..AS A MATTER OF FACT IT DID THIS SEVERAL TIMES...CAN WE NOT SHUT THE DAM TO GET THE LEVEL BACK UP?? THEN RELEASE IT SLOWLY AS IT COMES IN??
