Lake Lanier Water Levels Get National Attention

Lake Lanier Water LevelLooks like the announcement that Lake Lanier may drop another 5 to 15 feet and that Lake Allatoon may soon be empty is having an impact. News outlets and congressmen are finally realizing that this could be a pretty serious situation.

Here's a quick roundup of reaction, let us know if we missed any:
  • MSNBC and newspapers from as far away as Texas have been picking up the story.

  • Lake Lanier.org are calling the situation a crisis and wondering why the Corps is currently releasing "two to 10 times as much water as flows into Lanier."

  • Nathan Deal wonders if water is being let out "simply for the benefit of any species protected by the Endangered Species Act or because of political threats of a state delegation."

  • Forsyth County are closing more parks and boat ramps, including Young Deer Creek and most of Charleston Park.

We certainly don't have much water coming into the lake right now.
Why doesn't the Corp just allow out what comes in?
If we get limited amounts from the feeding streams then thats all that goes down stream.

Let the folks downstream manage their own water.

I really don't understand the Army Corps reasoning behind this. They are releasing more water than is coming into the lake. I live on the lake and it upsets me to no end to see the levels this low knowing something could be done about the slowing of the release.
I could give a tinkers damn about the mussels in Florida. This situation is real & needs immediate attention now1

HERE'S A GOOD ONE. BEFORE WE BOUGHT OUR HOME ON LAKE LANIER, WE WATCHED THE WEATHER FORCASTS FOR 2 YEARS...BIG MISTAKE..WHAT THEY TELL YOU IS IT IS GOING TO RAIN...WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU IS THAT IT NEVER DID..

HOW MORONIC CAN ONE BE TO PULL WATER OUT OF WHAT WE ENGINEERED TO BENEFIT OUR STATE..SIMPLE LOGIC TO ME...THERE IS SO MUCH WATER THAT COMES IN FROM OUR STREAMS...ALL WE DID WAS DIG A HOLE AND PLACE A CUP IN THE MIDDLE OF IT...THE CUP FILLS UP....THE STREAM CONTINUES WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF WATER...WHO THE HELL IS FLORIDA TO USE US AS THEIR PERSONAL RESERVOIR TO SAVE FISH THAT CAN MOVE ALONG LIKE THEY HAVE FOR YEARS TO SOME OTHER PLACE...FLORIDA WILL PAY THE PRICE WHEN OUR LAKE RUNS DRY AND THEIR FISH DIE OFF ANYWAY...THEN WHAT??? WOULD IT NOT HAVE BEEN A MORE PRUDENT MOVE TO UNDERSTAND THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON OUR OWN SPECIES THAT DEPEND ON THIS WATER???

What about the freshwater mussels in the lake? Should they be protected as well? Oh yea, by the way... shouldn't we also worry about the people around here who need water to drink? Have water restrictions been placed on the municipalities that draw from the 'Hooch downstream? As of this Monday, there were none in place. If they have a voice concerning our lake, we should have a voice in how much water they WASTE. There is a simple solution to all of this. Cut the outflow to match the inflow. Mother Nature would do it that way. We can't do that because the mussels would have to move, and because we don't have the guts to tell the environmentalist idiots to stuff a sock in it!!!

When is someone going to realize that the construction in Atlanta has outgrown the water supply. There is only so much water available to sustain a society before it is all gone. This is not an indefinite supply of water. Even if this wasn't a drought, the amount of homes being built is eventually going to outweigh the water supply. Property tax dollars won't mean anything when you won't be able to run water to one's house. Am I the only one who sees this point of view? I'm all for small business and construction, but when it gets to a point that you build beyond what the environment can sustain then you created a whole different set of issues. People need to realize that you cannot keep building and then ask questions later. This is evident right now before your eyes as we see the amount of homes being built far exceeding that which water can supply. This type of financial greed is going to ruin towns and states if it continues on with no one stepping up.
