| Lake Lanier Docks |
Number of Available DocksIn a 2004 study, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined the maximum number of docks on Lake Lanier would be 10,615. Early in 2007, the corps estimated there were about 500 available permits remaining. Although getting permission to add a dock to a house which doesn't have one is difficult, it is relatively straightforward to get approval to improve or replace a dock. A typical dock can range in price from $20,000 to $50,000. Dock SizesThe largest dock allowed on Lanier is 32 feet by 32 feet with a 40-foot ramp. Permits are given for different sizes of docks .
Dock ImprovementsAs bigger more modern homes are being built around Lake Lanier, old docks are disappearing. Few people are refurbishing, they are building new docks. Previously, Lake Lanier was full of old wooden docks that rested on styrofoam flotation devices. Pieces would often break loose and white dock pieces still float around the lake.
Modern docks are steel structures kept afloat by enclosed flotation devices. Many now have slips for two boats and offer the feature of a deck above the boat area.
