The city of Gainesville acquired approximately 2,650 acres of land as a gift from the Johnson and Johnson company. In 1980, the Chicopee Woods Park Commission was created as a political subdivision of the state of Georgia under an act of the general assembly of GA to oversee all activities within Chicopee Woods. In addition to the golf course, the land contains the Chicopee Woods Agriculture Center, the Elachee Nature Science Center and extensive wilderness areas. A 1 percent sales tax in Hall County provided the funds to build to the golf course, which opened in 1991.
